Cancelling GitHub Copilot only takes a minute if you know where to look. This guide walks you through cancelling a personal Copilot Pro or Pro+ plan, plus what to do if you're on a Business or Enterprise seat.
Before You Start
Make sure you're signing in to the account that actually pays for Copilot. If your access came from an organization or your employer, you can't cancel it yourself — an admin has to remove your seat.
Also know that GitHub does not offer partial-month refunds for individual plans. If you cancel mid-cycle, you keep access until the period ends.
Cancel GitHub Copilot Pro or Pro+ (Individual)
- Go to github.com and sign in to your personal account.
- Click your profile photo in the top-right corner and select Settings.
- In the left sidebar, click Billing and plans, then Plans and usage.
- Scroll down to the GitHub Copilot section.
- Click the three-dot menu (...) next to your Copilot plan and choose Cancel trial or Cancel Copilot.
- Confirm the cancellation on the next screen.
You'll get an email confirming the cancellation. Your Copilot access stays active until the end of the billing period you already paid for.
Track your trial deadline and cancel before you get charged.
Cancel a Free Trial Before You're Charged
Copilot Pro comes with a 30-day free trial. If you cancel any time before day 30, you won't be billed. Follow the same steps above and pick Cancel trial.
Set a reminder for day 28 or 29. GitHub does not send a heads-up before your trial converts to a paid plan.
Cancel GitHub Copilot Business or Enterprise
Business and Enterprise plans are managed by the organization or enterprise owner, not individual users. If you're the owner or billing manager:
- Sign in and go to your organization's page.
- Click Settings at the top.
- In the sidebar, choose Copilot > Access.
- To remove a single user, uncheck their seat. To cancel Copilot entirely, click Manage plan, then Cancel plan.
- Confirm the cancellation.
Seats you remove stop billing at the end of the current cycle. You can review the process in the official GitHub docs.
If you're a regular member of an org and want your seat removed, message your organization admin. There's no self-serve option.
Downgrade Instead of Cancelling
If you use Copilot occasionally but want to cut the cost, look at the free tier. GitHub Copilot Free gives you a limited number of code completions and chat messages per month at no cost. From the same Plans and usage page, choose Downgrade instead of Cancel to switch to the free plan.
Refunds and Billing Rules
| Situation | What Happens |
|---|---|
| Cancel monthly plan | Access continues until end of month, no refund |
| Cancel annual plan | Access continues until end of year, no prorated refund by default |
| Cancel during free trial | No charge if cancelled before day 30 |
| Business seat removed | Prorated credit applied to the org's next invoice |
Annual subscribers who feel they qualify for a refund can open a request through GitHub Support. Refunds are handled case-by-case and aren't guaranteed.
Common Problems
"I don't see a Copilot section in my billing page." You're probably signed in to the wrong account, or your Copilot access is coming from an organization. Check under Settings > Copilot in your personal account first — if it says access is provided by an org, that's where the billing lives.
"I cancelled but I'm still being charged." Confirm the cancellation email arrived. If a charge posts after cancellation, contact GitHub Support with your cancellation confirmation and the transaction ID.
"The Cancel button is greyed out." This usually happens when your payment method is failing or when the account is under an active enterprise agreement. Update your billing details first, then try again.
"I want to remove Copilot from my IDE but keep the subscription." You don't have to cancel — just uninstall or disable the Copilot extension in VS Code, JetBrains, or whichever editor you use. Your subscription and settings stay intact.
After You Cancel
Once your billing period ends, Copilot suggestions stop appearing in your editor. Your GitHub account, repos, and personal settings are untouched. You can resubscribe any time from the same Plans and usage page — GitHub even remembers your previous configuration.
